30th Wedding Anniversary Weekend

Today is Bob's and my 30th wedding anniversary. And if you are expecting me to say it...yes, I can't believe it's been that many years. Amazing. We wanted to get away for the weekend, so we traveled back to Granbury to stay at a favorite bed and breakfast called The Pomegranate House. Betty and Tommy Potts are the most gracious owners and hosts. We had stayed here once before for only one night, and liked it so much, that we came back for three nights. Tommy and Betty have a special for returning guests, three nights for the price of two. We took advantage of it on this Memorial Day weekend. We are very glad we did, because Tommy and Betty recently sold the Pom House and will have their last weekend as hosts the very next weekend. They have opted to move to be closer and more available to their grandchildren. Obviously running a B & B doesn't allow for free time with family on the weekends and holidays. The Pom House is great. There's five rooms, two in the house, and three cottages. We stayed in one of the cottages. They're comfortable and private. Tommy and Betty serve you coffee on the porch every morning around 7:15 or 7:30. Breakfast is at 9:00, and it is unbelieveable. Way too much delicious food. We enjoyed visiting with the other guests over breakfast. There were two other couples that were staying the same amount of time as us. Then other couples came in for either one or two nights. One morning we sat for over two hours at breakfast, just chatting with some other couples. We didn't have an agenda, so we weren't in any rush to take off. Betty always had sun tea ready on the porch any time we dropped by. And at night, Tommy had a fire going on the backyard patio. One night, Bob and I just sat on the double swing and just enjoyed the outdoors. Let me just say, it was really hard to go back to work this week.

Bob and I very much felt wonderfully relaxed. Like I said, it was a no-agenda weekend. We needed exactly that. We leisurely walked through the stores in the historic Granbury square. They even have a trolley to take you right from their doorstop into the square. There's a drive-in movie theater that was showing the new "Indiana Jones." Other guests went and said it was a fun experience. Bob and I weren't as excited about sitting in a warm car, and will opt for watching that movie in stadium, rocking seats in air conditioning. We did, however, take the Granbury Riverboat dinner cruise, complete with a nice meal and entertainment. Lake Granbury is part of the Brazos River, and unlike the lakes near us in Flo Mo, there are a lot of houses all along the waterfront. A mix of permanent homes, retirees, and weekend second homes. Very beautiful areas.

One night we ate at a place that came highly recommended called "Let's Eat." It's about 15 miles west from Granbury in Bluffdale. It's a hole-in-the-wall. A concrete, cinder-block building in a town so small you'd better not blink as you are driving through or you might miss it. Apparently the chef (and owner) used to work at The Mansion in Dallas. He got tired of the rat race in the city and moved out to Bluffdale. He's won the State Beef Cook-off the last two years. The place will only hold about 30 people tops. It has a few booths and then a long, communal table. The kitchen is in the same room. They clip the orders on a string with clothespins. The menu is not what you'd expect. Dinners range from 11.95 to 24.95. The fish of the day was sea bass. Bob and I, who never really eat a big beef dinner, ordered the rib-eye. Oh my. It was delicious. The sides were also wonderful. This place opens at 6:00. You can't walk in before that, because the door's locked. He opens it when he's ready. You'd better get there early, because there's usually a line forming outside. If there's not enough room, you can wait across the street at "The Greenwood" and they'll call you over there. The Greenwood is another experience in itself. An old tavern/Texas dance hall/honkey tonk. Oh yeah. You just gotta see it to believe it.

Our 30th wedding annivesary was low-key and relaxing. Just a time spent together. Not very different than our 30 years of marriage. If someone asked us what was the key to a long marriage, we'd have to answer, a faith in Christ, as number one. It is our faith in Christ that has given us the joy on the mountain tops and the deliverance through the valleys. God blessed me with a man who has been my best friend for 34 years. As we toasted our anniversary at Parma's Restaurant this evening, we looked forward to another 30 years!

Another Great Milestone

On May 10, 2008, the Davis family reached another wonderful milestone. All three of our children have now graduated from college. We are so very proud to say that Becca graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor's degree in Communications. Congrats to you, Becca! The world is an open door to you. May you walk through that door with your head held high, supported by an enormous amount of love from your family and friends.

Homecoming

Well, he's not quite like the prodigal son. He didn't go off and squander the family fortune. But he's coming home...even if just for a week. And we are going to celebrate. Steve and Mish fly in this afternoon from Portland. We haven't seen them since Thanksgiving. Becca hasn't seen them since they left in August. Too long. So we're a bit excited and praying that the storms don't mess up their flight. We'll have a busy time with them. Becca's graduation and birthday. Mother's Day together with my mom. Don't remember the last time I spent a Mother's Day with my mother. What a blessing to have family together! Even if just for a short time. :)

A TAKSing time

It's been a TAKSing week. Tuesday...Math, Wednesday...Reading, and today...makeups for those who were absent, along with 5th grade Science. Yeah, my sciatic nerve is flaring up from sitting on my butt all day watching students take a TAKS test. I guess it could be worse. I could be taking the tests. It's a trying week for all involved. The whole school can't take a recess. It's been gorgeous outside, but no recess because it may cause noise and distraction for the test takers.
I am so looking forward to Friday!

And next week my beloved children are altogether as we celebrate Becca's graduation from Arkansas!! My parents are flying in from Florida. Haven't seen them since February when my Dad had quadruple bypass! But now, praise God, he's recovering and converting the attic over the garage into living space! So, next week can't come soon enough.
